Passion, commitment, and innovation are a few of the instilled leadership qualities among Year 8 students, Omar Abdelaty, Corey Biggers, Tyler Bryers and Lachlan Tompkins. Having witnessed an alarming amount of students not recycling, they felt obliged to initiate change and guide others towards addressing the environmental impact. Their project challenges the behaviours of students by incentivising recycling. They piloted the program with QR codes, later expanding it to include a website, prizes and exclusive school items. This approach yielded a noticeable improvement in recycling in their school. Feedback from students, the school community, and business leaders in the Business Pitch session served as a catalyst for refining their concept. Furthermore, it motivated them to extend their concept to all schools. They are developing ways to improve recycling, while rewarding students for their conscientious efforts. In doing so, they contribute significantly in shaping a sustainable future in schools, actively promoting recycling and demonstrating that individuals can be recognised and rewarded for their environmental stewardship.
